Cage Toplines New PKD Film 4-15-05 Director Lee Tamahori told SCI FI Wire that he will helm Nicolas Cage in Next, the latest Hollywood adaptation of a work by SF writer Philip K. Dick. Tamahori (Die Another Day) said in an interview that the movie is set to begin production this summer for an as-yet-to-be-determined 2006 release date for Revolution Studios. Tamahori said that he and Cage, who will also produce, are still defining their approach to the film. "I know that sounds elusive, but this is a very tricky project," he said. "This movie is about time shifting, and time shifting in movies has always been tricky. Nick Cage and I are both looking for a new approach. We're looking for something that is visually arresting as well as physically fascinating and believable. The technique can wear itself out and become boring very fast. We don't want to turn this into a science-fiction movie without the science fiction."
Next is based on Dick's short story "The Golden Man," about a man with the ability to see short distances into the future. As the story unfolds, he uses his gift to outsmart a secret government organization bent on his capture, as well as to win the love of a woman and to prevent a terrorist attack. The screenplay is credited to Gary Goldman and Jason Koomick.

Roth Talks Next Project 11-18-04 Veteran film producer Joe Roth (The Forgotten) told SCI FI Wire that his company, Revolution Studios, is moving forward with Next, a big-screen adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story "The Golden Man." Roth added that he is undaunted by the spotty track record of recent Dick-inspired films, such as Impostor, Minority Report and Paycheck. Nicolas Cage (Face/Off) has signed on to star in the SF film, which Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day) will direct."I don't look at these things as an anthology or a collection," Roth said in an interview. "I only look at the screenplay I read." Roth added, "What worked about the screenplay is in the title: the notion that someone can actually see what's about to happen next [and thus change the future]. And it's the curse of that and how valuable that is to people who want to misuse it. In this case, there are governments. It's that conflict."
Roth praised Tamahori and Cage. "I think that Lee is a really interesting director, and Nic is a very interesting actor who can play both an action figure and kind of a tortured guy," he said. "It certainly felt like it worked for me." Gary Goldman, who previously wrote 1990's Total Recall based on Dick's story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," adapted "The Golden Man." Production will begin next year with an eye toward a 2006 release.

Next is next for Nic Cage 11-12-04
it would seem that Nicolas Cage is in one of those little commercial phases he goes through every now and again, when he makes a bunch of marquee movies before moving back onto the arthouse stuff. The most famous of these little sprees came after he won his Oscar in 1996 for Leaving Las Vegas, after which he promptly threw himself into the never-bettered triple-threat of The Rock, Con Air and Face/Off.
And now he’s at it again. December sees the former Nicky Coppola and his ever-changing hairline reteam with Jerry Bruckheimer on glossy action adventure, National Treasure. In January, despite Cage’s bizarre insistence last week that he was still in negotiations for the role, he heads Down Under to star as the Ghost Rider in Mark Steven Johnson’s Marvel comics adaptation. And inbetween that, he squeezed in the admittedly lower-key (but still revolving around guns) thriller, Lord Of War, in which he plays an arms dealer.
But he’s still not got his action fix out of his system yet. Today it was announced that Cage has lined up his next project, which also happens to be the next for Die Another Day and xXx2 director, Lee Tamahori. And the title of their next? Why, Next, of course!
The film is the latest in the long line of movies to be based on the work of sci-fi god, Philip K. Dick, in this case the story, The Golden Man. Cage will play a guy who can see into the future, and amend it accordingly. But soon he’s forced to choose between saving the world… or saving himself. No choice, really, in our eyes – if he doesn’t save the world, he’s screwed anyway. But we’re sure Cage and Tamahori will pull a rabbit out of the hat with their next that is Next.
Filming starts in the summer, giving Cage plenty of Ghost Rider time. The movie will be penned by Gary Goldman, who wrote the greatest Dick adaptation of them all, Total Recall (what’s that, you say? Blade whatty? OK, second greatest). So that bodes well. Right?
